New Southern Air Command and Base Headquarters at Katunayake Declared open by the Commander

Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake being the oldest and largest Air Base of the Sri Lanka Air Force is once again at the center of a historical turning point. A newly built building for the Headquarters of the Southern Air Command of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the Base Headquarters of SLAF Base Katunayake was declared open by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias on 20 August 2020.

This event marks the commencement of the Air Command concept of the SLAF with the new building which will provide vital infrastructure for administrative functioning of the Southern Air Command as well as SLAF Base Katunayake.

SLAF Base Katunayake, under the leadership of its Base Commander, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuiyacontha coordinated the construction of the new building within a very short time. The construction of the building was carried out by engineering troops from the Civil Engineering Wing at SLAF Base Katunayake under the supervision of the Directorate of Civil Engineering.

The event was attended by the Chief of Staff and Members of the Air Force Board of Management. All Officers at SLAF Base Katunayake together with a cross section of Other Ranks from the Base also participated for this historical event.
