22nd GUWAN HAMUDA PAPEDI SAWARIYA FLAGGED OFF IN COLOMBO

The Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2021, the 22nd edition of the race was flagged off by the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa on the invitation by Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana this morning (7 March 2021) in front of Air Force Headquarters. This year’s race which commenced today is conducted in line with the 70th anniversary. The Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa also called on the Commander at his Officer where the Hon. Minister place a note in the visitors’ book. The Commander also presented the Hon. Minister with special mementos to mark his visit. During the ceremony the Commander also presented the Hon. Minister with the first copy of a publication authored by Air Commodore Padman de Costa titled “Glorious Sporting History”.
The Men's race that commenced this morning is scheduled to complete in front of the Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake, covering a distance of 159.1km. The race is scheduled to pass through Ja-Ela, Minuwangoda, Giriulla, Narammala, Kuliyapitiya, Madampe and Negambo. More than 150 riders started the race this morning.
The women’s race commenced at Ekala in front of the SLAF Trade Training School. It will also conclude in front of the Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake, covering a distance of 78.3 km. The women’s race is scheduled to pass through Ekala, Minuwangoda, Giriulla, Dankotuwa and Negombo.
The Principal Sponsor for the 22nd Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya is SLT Mobitel, while People’s Insurance is the insurance partner and the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation along with Channel Eye is the Official Electronic Media Partner while Neth FM is the Official Radio Partner. The entire race will be telecasted live on Channel Eye.
The awards ceremony will be held this evening at the Eagles' Lagoon View Banquet Hall located at Katunayake. This year’s race was organized by SLAF Cycling under the leadership of Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Prasanna Payoe and under the guidance of the Secretary SLAF Cycling, Air Commodore Kithsiri Leelaratne. Today’s event was organized with strict adherences health guidelines with respect to the prevention of COVID-19.
