Paying Tribute to Heroes of the Skies

Commemorating the supreme sacrifice made by the war heroes of the No. 7 and No. 9 helicopter squadrons, several religious ceremonies took place at SLAF Base Hingurakgoda during the past two weeks.

Both the No. 7 transport helicopter squadron and No. 9 attack helicopter squadrons  lost several of their flying crews in action and the commemoration was a fitting tribute to these valiant heroes who rose to defend the motherland.

Of the multi religious ceremonies planned for the memorial, the Islamic ceremony took place at Hathamune Jumma Mosque on 03 November, 2010. Meanwhile the Christian ceremony was held at the Hingurakgoda Roman Catholic Church on 13 November, 2010.

On the same date, a full night ‘pirith’ chanting and  an Alms giving  was held on the next day, at the camp premises as part of the Buddhist religious activities, with the participation of family members of the heroic crews and maintenance personnel of the No 09 and No 07 Squadrons.
