SRI LANKA AIR FORCE LAUNCHES NEELAGIRI MAHA SEYA RESTORATION PROJECT

According to the instructions given by Ministry of Defence and under the guidance of Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, Sri Lanka Air Force has taken over the restoration of Nilagiri Maha Seya which is located in Lahugala. Nilagiriya Stupa is Located 108 Km away from SLAF Ampara and 22 Km away from the SLAF Detachment Panama. This is located in the thick jungles of Lahugala National Park and belongs to Magul Maha Viharaya Lahugala. Archaeological Department considers this is as the biggest stupa in the Eastern Province which was built in the 3rd century and the recent renovation works commenced in 2011 after a survey done by Professor Raj Somadeva, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

In view of restoration, the preliminary meeting was conducted on 29th December 2021 at the location with Chief Monk Lahugala, Representatives from Ministry of Defence, Acting Director Civil Engineering and Director Welfare from Air Force Headquarters, Commanding Officer SLAF Station Ampara, Commanding Officer Civil Engineering Wing, Senior Military and Police Officers,   Officials from Archaeological Department along with other Government Officials in Ampara and Lahugala.
