PRESS BRIEFING ON SLAF SPORTS WAY FORWARD 2022, 71ST AIR FORCE ANNIVERSARY, COMMANDER’S CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT 2022 AND GUWAN HAMUDA PAPEDI SAWARIYA

The press briefing of the ‘SLAF Sports Way Forward – 2022’, ‘Air Force Commander’s Cup Golf Tournament – 2022’, 23rd consecutive ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya’ and ‘71st Air Force Anniversary’ celebration was held at the Air Force Headquarters, Colombo today (12th January 2022).

The highlights at the event were the presenting of ‘SLAF Sports Way Forward- 2022’ which is the brief of upcoming sport events in Air Force Sports calendar and unveiling of the Commander’s Cup Golf Trophy by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana and Group Chief Officer Dialog Enterprises Mr. Naveen Peiris.

Eagles’ Golf Links of Sri Lanka Air Force will host the Commander’s Cup – 2022, Annual Golf Tournament for Men and Women from 21 to 23 January 2022 at the picturesque setting of China Bay, close to the Harbour City of Trincomalee. This year the Commander’s Cup is once again powered by Dialog Enterprise as the enterprise connectivity partner and this is the 9th consecutive time of the tournament. At the conclusion of the first segment of the press briefing, the symbolic sponsorship cheque was handed over to the Commander by Group Chief Officer Dialog Enterprises Mr. Naveen Peiris.

‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya -2022’ will be conducted for the 23rd successive year in concurrence with the 71st Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Over one hundred male and fifty female Sri Lankan ranking and other riders are expected to compete for this year’s race.

Three (3) day men’s race will start on 4th of March 2022 from Air Force Headquarters Colombo and it will finish at SLAF Base Katunayake on 6th of March 2022. It will cover an approximate distance of 400 Km while the women’s race will start on 6th of March form Puttalam and will cover an approximate distance of 105 Km and will finish at Katunayake. The awards ceremony will be held at ‘Eagles Lagoon View’ Banquet hall at Katunayake.

Sri Lanka Air Force will be proudly celebrating its 71st Anniversary on the 2nd of March 2022. This year celebration will commence with religious activities giving prominence to Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects while upholding its rich tradition on the "AIR FORCE DAY" which will be the premier event in its calendar. This year, the event will be celebrated incline to the strict health guidelines in place for prevention of COVID-19.

The Press Brief was conducted with the participation of the Chief of Staff Air Vice Marshal Prasanna Payoe, Chairman SLAF Golf Air Vice Marshal Prasanna Ranasinghe,  Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Commodore Kithsiri Leelaratne, Director Sport of SLAF Air Commodore Senaka Fernandopulle and Director Media of the SLAF, Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe.
