PRESS BRIEFING ON “GUWAN HAMUDA PAPEDI SAWARIYA 2023”

The press briefing on the “ Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2023” was held today (22 February 2023) at the Air Force Headquarters. This year’s race will be conducted for the 24th consecutive time in concurrence with 72nd Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Over one hundred male and over thirty female Sri Lankan ranking/other cyclists are expected to compete in this race. Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya is recognized as one of the premier and most thrilling events in the Sri Lankan Cycling event calendar.
The duration of the men’s race will be 3 days. It will start on 02nd March 2023 from Air Force Headquarters Colombo, passing each leg through Kandy, Polonnaruwa and finish in Anuradhapura with a distance of approximately 396 km while women’s race will be commenced on 04th March 2023 as a single leg event from Habarana to Anuradhapura.
The awards ceremony will be held at the SLAF Base in Anuradhapura premises on 04th March 2023 where the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana will grace the occasion with the sponsors and other distinguished guests.
The welcome note was delivered by Director SLAF Media, Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe while the press briefing was chaired by the Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera. The Secretary SLAF Cycling, Group Captain Ranga Perera, General Manager Nippon Paint Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Nemantha Abeysinghe, Secretary Sri Lanka Cycling Federation, Mr. Nalin Adikarachchige and General Manager Abans Group of Company, Mr. Lalindra Brahmana participated as panel members at the press briefing. A large number of journalists from the electronic and print media were also present at the occasion.
The title sponsor of the race this year is Nippon Paint Lanka (Pvt) Ltd while SLT Mobitel is the official Telecommunications Partner, People's Insurance is the Official Insurance Partner and “Vitagen” Maliban Biscuit Manufactories Private Limited is the Official Nutrition Partner. At the same time, the event will be co-sponsored by Abans Group of Company. The spectators have been provided the opportunity to watch this competition live on the Sri Lanka Rupavahini and Channel Eye as well as the opportunity to listen to live updates through the Neth FM radio channel this year too.
Before the conclusion of the press briefing, the sponsorship cheques and official letters were handed over to the Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera respectively by General Manager Nippon Paint Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Nemantha Abeysinghe, General Manager Abans Group of Company, Mr. Laleendra Brahmana, Deputy Chief Marketing Officer SLT Mobitel, Mr. Rohana Ellawala, Regional Sales Manager Maliban Biscuit Manufactories Private Limited, Mr. Kalum Perera and Head of National Sales People’s Insurance PLC, Mr. Danushka Hettiarachchi.
