First leg of the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’ completed

SLAF cyclist in the lead.
Sri Lanka Air Force cyclist Dinesh Dhanushka finished in the lead as the first leg of the Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya drew to close on 19 January, 2011 at Kaduruwela.
The premier cross-country cycling tournament which commenced from Vavuniya this morning saw the participation of over hundred competitors with 93 cyclists in the Racing category and 20 in the Standard division.
Several cycling clubs participated in the event such as the Southern Cycle Club, Saama Papedi Samajaya, ‘Street Arrow’ and Cycling Club from Kolonnawa. Numerous independent participants also competed from the Ports Authority and Dehiwala Municipal Council. Top cyclists from Army, Navy, Police and Air Force were also amongst the keenly contested first phase of the tournament.
The highly competitive Racing category featuring the island’s best cyclists was flagged off at the starting point by Base commander of SLAF Vavuniya, Air Commodore KFR Perera. Meanwhile, DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara flagged off the start of the race for the Standard category, which was held for amateur cyclists from the Vavuniya and Anuradhapura areas.
The Standard race which drew to a close at Anuradhapura was flagged off at the finishing line by Wing Commander HU Jayaweera, Base Signal Officer of SLAF Base Anuradhapura.
Peddling a challenging distance of 159 Km from Vavuniya to Kaduruwela, the competitors of the Racing event were flagged at the finishing line by Group Captain Clyde Weerakoon, the Base Commander of SLAF Base Hingurakgoda.
Two sprints were clocked in the midst of the race to ensure the maintenance of an energetic speed firstly at Thirappane which was followed by the second sprint at Minneriya.
The top four to cross the finishing line at Kaduruwela after the completion of the first phase are as follows:

2. Gayan Sanjeewa (Navy)
3. Janaka Wijesuriya ( Army)
4. Buddhika Warnakulasuriya (SLAF)
