THE CRADLE OF THE TRANSPORT FLYING CELEBRATES 27TH ANNIVERSARY

The No. 8 Tactical Transport Squadron at SLAF Base Ratmalana, which is famously known as the cradle of transport pilots, celebrates its 27th anniversary on 01 April 2023. The squadron was established in 1996 and was previously known as No. 201 Squadron. The renowned Y-12 aircraft have been utilised since its inception, and the inventory has been progressively strengthened with the induction of B-200 aircraft for diversified roles in the entire spectrum of airpower applications, which includes VVIP/VIP transportations, casualty evacuations, air ambulances, visual and senser-augmented day/night real-time surveillance and reconnaissance, and search and rescue operations.

Squadron expanded its wings with two MA-60 aircraft to blossom the domestic commercial/military flying operations. During the long history of the Squadron, it has been placed under the guidance of 17 Commanding Officers and is presently led by Wing Commander Pasan Dayananda.

In line with the celebration, a Community Service Responsibility project was conducted by the personnel from No. 8 Squadron with the intention of uplifting the living standards of differently abled personnel at Camila School Mattegoda, followed by a religious ceremony at Mallikarama Temple Ratmalana. The celebration commenced with the customary working parade, which was reviewed by the Commanding Officer followed by a tree planting at the squadron premises. The celebration concluded with a cricket tournament organized by the squadron personnel to keep up the team spirit and brotherhood among the servicemen.
