Air Force in the lead as ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’ reaches Colombo

Grand finale tomorrow in Koggala
Jeewan Jayasinghe of SLAF pedaled to victory amongst the cheers of the massive crowd gathered near the Air Force unit Colombo, as the third leg of the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’ concluded today, 21st January, 2011 in Colombo .
Air Vice Marshal Asoka Amunugama flagged off the third leg which began early morning from the hilly terrains. 72 cyclists competed in today’s race where competitors covered a distance of 115 Km from Kandy to Colombo in the keenly contested race.
SLAF rider Samantha Lakmal led the way at the 1st sprint at Pilimathalawa followed by Asanka Pradeep (Army), Janaka Wijesinghe (Army) and Jeewan Jayasinghe (SLAF).
The decisive turn of speed occurred at Yakkala which was a forecast to the results of today’s race. When competitors commenced the 2nd sprint at Kiribathgoda, Jeewan Jayasinghe (SLAF) was leading the pack with Sanath Jayasinghe (Army) in second place. Wasantha Harischandra (Army) and Buddhika Warnakulasuriya (SLAF) sped across the Kiribathgoda in third and fourth places respectively.
As the race approached the Lake House roundabout, a massive crowd including media personnel had gathered on either side of the road to cheer the competitors. Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal P.B. Premachandra waved the flag as the winners sped across the finish line racing almost head to head. Jeewan Jayasinghe (SLAF) crossed the finish line triumphantly barely seconds before Sanath Jayasinghe (Army) while Wasantha Harischandra (Army) took third place in today’s race.
