Victory is Ours!!! Double wins for SLAF at ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’

Adding the perfect start to the 60th anniversary celebrations, Sri Lanka Air Force clocked double wins at the grand finale of the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’ clinching both 1st and 2nd place.
Riders Buddhika Warnakulasuriya and Dinesh Dhanushka brought glory to SLAF with their outstanding performance in the premier cross country cycling tour which was held in four stages and concluded today at Koggala.
Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke flagged off the and final leg which began from Colombo in front of the SLAF Headquarters this morning.
Competitors covered a distance of 132 Km from Colombo to Koggala. Crowds cheering and supporting the riders lined up the route on either side of the Galle Road.
The champ of the third leg of the tour, Jeewan Jayasinghe (SLAF) was in the lead as the competitors passed the first sprint point at Ratmalana. Asiri Kalum (Southern Club), B.J. Sumanasekara (Mix) & Nilanga Appuhami (SLAF) passed the first sprint point in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places respectively.
However upon reaching Kalutara, the second sprint point of the fourth leg of the cycle tour, the standings has changed completely. Leading the pack was Dileepa Prabath (Army), Isuru Prabath (SLAF), closely followed by Dhanushka Kumara (DMCC) & Sanath Jayasinghe (Army). Dileepa and Isuru continued their rapid sprint till Aluthgama but lost speed subsequently.
It was Meemanage Perera (Army) who crossed the finish, flagged off by Chairman Air Force cycling, Air Vice Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala. Meanwhile Dinesh Dhanushka (SLAF) and Sumithra Fernando (Super Wheels) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively at SLAF Unit Koggala.
Spirits were high and cheers were many as the throng of people gathered at Koggala cheered on the competitors whose cycling journey had indeed joined the island in one single strand of camaraderie and unity.
