A REAL -TIME SEARCH AND RESCUE (SAR) EXERCISE AT HIGH ALTITUDE TERRAIN BY REGIMENT SPECIAL FORCES

A comprehensive real-time Search and Rescue
(SAR) exercise was conducted at high altitudes from 01 April 2023 to 07
April 2023 by Regiment Special Forces (RSF) personnel of the No. 4
Search and Rescue Training course. The exercises were conducted by the
Regiment Special Forces Training School at SLAF Station Morawewa in the
general areas of Boralanda, Ohiya, Horton Plains, World’s End,
Pattoipola, Dayagama, Ambewela and
Pidurutalagala.
The high altitude training phase for RSF personnel has been designed to achieve the professionalism necessary to conduct future SAR missions in high altitude terrain, including Human Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions during natural calamities and SAR missions to rescue/ recovery operations with respect to Aviation accidents in the same terrain. The training programme included terrain navigation, GPS handling, combat first aid, and situation handling for conducting search and rescue missions at high altitudes with climate orientations to the low temperature terrain in the said areas.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the Commanding Officer of the Regiment Special Forces Wing, Wing Commander Sumith Bandara, who led the training programme under the guidance and direct supervision of Director General Ground Operations, Air Vice Marshal Waruna Gunawardana, and Director General Training, Air Vice Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe.
