In accordance with the objective of enhancing coconut cultivation in the country, an initiative known as the "Guwan Kapruka" programme has been launched under the guidance of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana and the dedication of the Command Agro Unit at SLAF Base Katunayake.

The primary goal of this commendable endeavour is to plant 50,000 coconut seedlings across the nation within a span of five years. In the year 2023 alone, a total of 10,000 seedlings are planned for planting under the capable management of the Command Agro Officer, Air Commodore Erandika Gunawardena. Furthermore, the resulting harvest from these cultivations will effectively cater to the growing demand for coconuts within the SLAF establishments.

To commence the "Guwan Kapruka" programme, the initial distribution of coconut plants and fertilizer took place at SLAF Base Katunayake on 26 May 2023. The event witnessed the active participation of the acting Base Commander of SLAF Base Katunayake, Air Commodore SR Udukubura. Symbolic presentations of coconut seedlings were made to representatives from SLAF Base Anuradhapura, SLAF Trade Training School Ekala, and SLAF Station Bandaranaike International Airport during the ceremony.

Furthermore, arrangements have been diligently made to provide coconut plants to both service and civil personnel upon request, enabling them to plant these seedlings on their personal lands. This initiative aims to encourage broader involvement and participation in the programme.

The "Guwan Kapruka" programme serves as a significant step towards the advancement of coconut cultivation in Sri Lanka. It not only contributes to the expansion of coconut plantations but also promotes self-sufficiency in meeting the coconut requirements of the SLAF establishments.
