SLAF ASSISTS IN THE TRAINING SESSIONS AT ASIA PACIFIC ALLIANCE FOR DISASTER MANAGEMENT SRI LANKA (A-PAD SL)

The Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) recently conducted its annual Swift Water Search and Rescue Training from 13 July to 20 July 2023 in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. The training received solemn approval from the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa and unwavering assistance from the Commandant of the SLAF Academy China Bay, Air Commodore Deshapriya Silva. The primary goal of the training was to achieve International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) standards, addressing the nation's climate-induced disasters.

In collaboration with the Sri Lanka Air Force, A-PAD SL successfully hosted and coordinated the Level 01 training in two sessions, providing training to 60 individuals from various sectors in Sri Lanka. The participants included Lion Brewery Ceylon PLC, Aitken Spence PLC, The National Body of Sri Lanka Life Saving, Sri Lanka Medical Association, Serendib Educational Foundation, The Pearl Protectors Sri Lanka and the University of Colombo, along with enthusiastic Sri Lanka Air Force personnel.

The comprehensive training, supervised by seven internationally certified trainers, covered swift water rescue operations and included Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. Participants gained hands-on experience in bay rescue, boat capsize, Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) maintenance, night training, swift water rafting and throw bag rescue.

This initiative, supported by the Embassy of Japan through the Overseas Development Assistance Programme, aimed to equip the Sri Lanka Air Force with effective swift water rescue capabilities during natural disasters. It emphasized the importance of coordination and communication between civil and military partnerships to ensure seamless and efficient rescue operations in Sri Lanka.
