SRI LANKAN DEFENCE SERVICES RUGBY TEAM WON THIRD PLACE IN 1ST CISM WORLD MILITARY RUGBY-7 CHALLENGE IN RUSSIA

The Sri Lankan Defence Services Rugby team departed the country to participate in the 1st CISM Military Rugby-7 Challenge which was held from 22 August to 27 August 2023 in Moscow, Russia. This Championship was contested by leading countries such as Russia, South Africa, Belarus and Bangladesh.
The Sri Lankan Defence Services Rugby team achieved yet another remarkable triumph following the successful movement in the 1st CISM Military Rugby-7 Challenge in 2023, where they achieved third place. Displaying exceptional skill and resilience, added a new title by securing stunning victories against Belarus and Bangladesh during the Defence Services rugby tournament held in Moscow, Russia.
Despite facing challenging conditions with tough weather and ground cushion, the Sri Lankan Defence Services Rugby team demonstrated their bravery and emerged victorious against Belarus and Bangladesh with a dominant score line of 31 to 05 and 27 to 10 respectively. This hard-fought battle showcased the team's determination and ability to overcome obstacles.
Later in the finals, the Sri Lankan Defence Services Rugby team arrived at the tournament with high hopes and confidence, having previously defeated the two teams in Moscow during the league. However, much to the disappointment, Russia and South Africa arrived with a formidable setup and an attacking mindset, ultimately prevailing over their opponents with a score of 31 and 20 respectively at the final whistle where Russia claimed the championship while South Africa secured the runner up.
The Sri Lankan Defence Services team was comprised of 13 players along with four officials from SL Army, SL Navy and SL Air Force. Commodore PASK Pitigala from SL Navy who was the Chairman of Defence Services Rugby and the Chief of the Mission while the team manager was Brigadier DK Aluthdeniya. This participation was to endure the military and sports diplomacy among the participating countries while complementing the motto of CISM “Friendship through Sports”.
