34TH GENERAL CONVOCATION OF GENERAL SIR JOHN KOTELAWALA DEFENCE UNIVERSITY CONCLUDES AT THE BMICH

The 34th General Convocation of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was concluded at the BMICH yesterday (04 October 2023). The President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Honourable Ranil Wickramasinghe graced the convocation as the Chief Guest. 47 SLAF Master Graduate and Postgraduate Diploma holders and 96 SLAF Bachelor’s Degree holders from different faculties of the University received parchments at this year’s General Convocation.
The President presented special awards to Cadet Officer RTLA De Silva as the Best Army Officer, Sub Lieutenant SH Madanayake as the Best Naval Officer, Flying Officer WARD Jayathilake as the Best Air Force Officer. The sword of Honour for the Best All-Round Performance of Intake 36 was awarded to Sub Lieutenant SH Madanayake.
The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was established in 1981 to uplift the professionalism of Tri-Services Officers. It was elevated into a fully-fledged University in 2009 and the same year it was opened for civilian students as well. At present, members of the Tri-Services, local and foreign students can pursue doctoral, postgraduate and postgraduate diploma courses at the University.
Ambassadors and High Commissioners, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd), Secretaries of other ministries, Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, the Inspector General of Police, Director-General of the Civil Defence Force and other Heads of the Security Sector, Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University General SHS Kottegoda (Retd), Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, Chief of Staff of the SLAF and Members of the Air Force Board Management were among the distinguished gathering yesterday.
