MI 17 HELICOPTER OF SLAF SUPPORTS VITAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT ON ADAM'S PEAK

The MI-17 helicopter of the No.06 Helicopter Squadron successfully completed the Under-Slung Operation at Adam’s Peak on 18 December 2023, under the guidance of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa and under the supervision of the Director General Air Operations, Air Vice Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe. The Under-Slung operation was initiated on 15 December 2023, to support the construction work currently underway for the generation of electricity for the pumping stations of the new drinking water project on Adam's Peak.

During the four-day operation, the aircraft's crew accomplished 25 sorties, dedicating a total of 9 hours and 45 minutes. They successfully airlifted 25 tons from Nallathanniya Ground to the destinations of Indikatupaana and Rathu Ambalama on Adam's Peak, despite challenging conditions. The SLAF pilots played a crucial role in airlifting various equipment and materials, including 4 electrical transformers, water pumps, numerous iron electric poles, electric wire drums, cement, sand and other essential items.

Wing Commander Rasanka Wijewardena led the whole operation with a professional team of 24 Officers and 71 Airmen from the Sri Lanka Air Force. Additionally, personnel from the Ceylon Electricity Board and police personnel from Nallathanniya Police Station provided assistance during the operation.
