AIR CHIEF ATTENDS THE FLIGHT SAFETY REVIEW WORKSHOP FOR SLAF PILOTS

The Commander of the  Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, along with Director General Planning, Air Vice Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, and Director General Air Operations, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanawera, attended the Flight Safety Review Workshop held at the No. 04 VIP/VVIP Helicopter Squadron today (21 May 2024). Pilots from other flying squadrons participated in the workshop remotely through Zoom technology. The workshop was organized by the Flight Safety Inspectorate of the SLAF.

During the workshop, pilots from the No. 04 Squadron provided briefings on their current roles in VIP/VVIP flying duties and their operational responsibilities. The knowledge-sharing session included case studies of recent helicopter crashes in Iran and Malaysia, which were analyzed to acquire lessons learned and discussed the implementation of enhanced safety measures.

Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa contributed significantly to the session by sharing his extensive flying experience and advising pilots to prioritize flight safety in all operations, drawing on numerous past scenarios. He also emphasized the importance of being vigilant about adverse weather conditions in the region. Air Vice Marshal Edirisinghe and Air Vice Marshal Sumanawera also shared their experiences, contributing to the discussion.

Following the session, the Commander inspected the safety gear and emergency equipment used for rescue and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, which had been arranged by the No. 04 Squadron to assess the emergency response preparedness.
