SLAF SPORTS PERSONNEL HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa honoured SLAF personnel today(24 July 2024) at Air Force Headquarters for their exemplary performances at international sports events. The Commander commended the athletes for their dedication, skill and the honour they have brought to the SLAF and Sri Lanka.
Among the celebrated athletes, Leading Aircraftman Perera RHA earned a bronze medal in the team event at the 6th Asian Carrom Championship 2024 held in the Maldives from 27 April to 1 May 2024. Aircraftman 2 Under Training Peiris MHM and Aircraftwoman 2 Under Training Kavindi TGT also secured a silver medal in the team event and Kavindi TGT added to the tally with a bronze medal in the Women’s Doubles event.
In athletics, Aircraftman 2 Under Training Tharanga PR made a remarkable achievement at the 2nd Asian Throwing Championship 2024 in South Korea on 14 and 15 June 2024. Tharanga PR won the gold medal in the javelin throw, setting a new meet record and Sri Lanka National Record with a throw of 85.45 meters.
Additionally, at the 8th South Asian Karate Championship 2024 held in Bhutan from 13 July to 20 July 2024, Corporal Senarathne RPSA secured a silver medal in the over 68 individual Kumite and another silver in the team Kumite event. Leading Aircraftwoman Kulathunga PSK earned a bronze medal in the individual Kumite and contributed to the team Kumite’s silver medal. Aircraftwoman 2 Under Training Peiris THD triumphed with a gold medal in the 55 kg individual Kumite and also claimed a silver medal in the team Kumite event.
The Commander congratulated all the sports achievers for their exceptional performances and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence on the international stage. He emphasized the importance of their contributions in elevating the prestige of the SLAF and urged all sports personnel to keep the SLAF flag flying high with their continued success.
