SLAF ENHANCES MARITIME SURVEILLANCE WITH INDO-228 AIRCRAFT REPLACEMENT

In a significant development aimed at maintaining Sri Lanka’s maritime surveillance capabilities, the SLAF welcomed an Indian Naval Dornier 228 (INDO-228) maritime surveillance aircraft today (05 September 2024) at SLAF Base Katunayake. The newly arrived aircraft replaces the previous INDO-228, ensuring continued operational efficiency in safeguarding the island's territorial waters. The aircraft arrived from India, marking a vital addition to the SLAF's operational fleet.

The INDO-228 aircraft has become an integral component of Sri Lanka’s defence infrastructure, having played a critical role in a range of operations. These include maritime and coastal surveillance, monitoring Sri Lanka’s airspace and Exclusive Economic Zone and executing Search and Rescue missions. The aircraft has also contributed significantly to maritime pollution monitoring and control efforts, further enhancing national security and environmental protection.

This aircraft will be deployed at No 03 Maritime Squadron in SLAF Academy China Bay tomorrow (06 September 2024) where it will commence its operational duties.

Sri Lanka Air Force stands as the sole gallant aerial force in the nation, skillfully projecting airpower over its airspace and supporting the operations of surface entities.
