AIR VICE MARSHAL MUDITHA MAHAWATTEGE BIDS ADIEU TO THE SRI LANKA AIR FORCE

Air Vice Marshal Muditha Mahawattege USP, MSc (Sec & Strat Std), BSc (Mech Eng), AEng, AMIE(SL), MIM(SL), MITD(SL), MITD(SL), ndc, Z bid adieu to the Sri Lanka Air Force today (07 September 2024), after completing more than 33 years of dedicated service to the nation. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointment of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

Air Vice Marshal Mahawattege made an official farewell call on the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, at his office on 04 September 2024. The Commander commended him for his dedicated service rendered to the nation and to the Sri Lanka Air Force in particular. The Commander also emphasized that he was one of the key stakeholders during times of need for our motherland, and that his heroic history will remain etched in the annals of the SLAF. The Commander and Air Vice Marshal Mahawattege exchanged mementos to mark the occasion. Subsequently, he was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of Honour by the SLAF Colour Wing before departing from Air Force Headquarters at Defence Headquarters Complex for the last time. In recognition of the outstanding service rendered to the nation, the Farewell Dinner was graciously hosted in honour of Air Vice Marshal Mahawattege with the presence of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa along with Chairperson SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Enoka Rajapaksa and the members of the Air Force Board of Management. This momentous occasion took place at the Air Force Headquarters Officers' Mess in Colombo on the same day night.

Air Vice Marshal Muditha Mahawattege embarked to his military journey on 14 November 1989 as an Officer Cadet of the 7th Intake of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Ratmalana. He successfully completed the Basic Combat Training and pursued undergraduate studies as a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the Kotelawala Defence University. On 14 October 1991, he was commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer in the Aeronautical and General Engineering Branch.

During his service career in Sri Lanka Air Force, he has been entrusted with many key appointments such as the Officer Commanding Maintenance of No.10 Fighter Squadron where he had devoted his valuable service for 16 years. Further, Staff Officer Aeronautical Engineering I, Aeronautical Engineering III, General Engineering II , Command Quality Assurance Inspector for Aeronautical Engineering, Commanding Officer of Motor Transport Repair & Overhaul Wing, Commanding Officer General Engineering Wing,  Commanding Officer of SLAF Trade Training School Ekala, Command Quality Assurance Officer, Deputy Director Aeronautical Engineering, Director Aeronautical Engineering Personnel and Planning and the Director General Aeronautical Engineering  of SLAF before being appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

In his journey towards academic perfection, Air Vice Marshal Mahawattage has completed many of milestones, including the Junior Command and Staff Course at the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay, the Senior Command and Staff Course in Pakistan, and the Master of Science in Strategic Studies at the Kotelawala Defence University. He holds a license for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering from Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority.

For his distinguished and exemplary service, he has been awarded with “Uttama Seva Padakkama”.In addition, he holds the appointment as the Chairman, Sri Lanka Air Force Motor Racing. Air Vice Marshal Muditha Mahawattege is married to  Vindya and blessed with a Daughter Pujani
