SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit stages ‘Bathi Gee Piduma’

SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, in collaboration with SLAF Station Colombo, staged ‘Bathi Gee Piduma’, a Vesak Bhakthi Gee Programme, in the PM hours on 18 May 2011 at the ‘Rifle Green’ Sports Grounds at SLAF Station Colombo to mark the 2600 Sambudhathva Jayanthi.
Chairperson of MOD Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, graced the occasion as the chief guest while Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, Mrs. Neluka Dissanayake and Mrs. Asha Balasooriya, the Chairpersons of Seva Vanitha Units of the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Police respectively, too attended the event as special invitees. Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama Chairperson of SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Neelika Abeywickrema and the Commanding Officer of SLAF Station Colombo, Air Commodore Vijitha Gunaratne, received the chief guest and the special invitees.
The proceedings of this special event took wing at 1845 hours when the Commander opened the “Dansela” that was set up at the same location offering specially prepared sago to the attendees. A Vesak Lanterns Competition too had been organized by the SLAF Station Colombo among the SLAF personnel in line with this event and the winning entries adored the venue.
‘Bethi Gee Piduma’ consisted of fourteen famous soul-soothing songs sung by various artistes extolling the life and deeds of the Lord Buddha. The songs were sung by five choirs of SLAF personnel and their family members, each choir comprising thirty personnel. SLAF Colombo Officers’ Mess, SLAF Colombo WOs’ & SNCOs’ Mess, SLAF Colombo Corporals’ Club & LACs’ Club, Children of SLAF Colombo Officers & Other Ranks and the SLAF Band formed up the five choirs. The special feature of the show was the ballet choreographed and performed by the SLAF Band highlighting the special events of the Lord Buddha’s life from ‘Abhinishkramana’ to the ‘Sambuddhathva’.
The event was well attended by SLAF Officers, Other Ranks and their family members, especially those serving at SLAF Headquarters and SLAF Station Colombo. The event was also opened to the general public and those visiting the Colombo Vesak celebrations, especially from outstations, were seen attending and enjoying the show. On conclusion of the performances, the children of SLAF Officers’ & Other Ranks who formed up the children’s choir received gifts and certificates from the Commander of the Air Force.
