DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE SLAF WAS APPOINTED

Air Vice Marshal Chaminda Wickremaratne was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force, with effect from today (18 December 2024). The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, officially handed over the letter of appointment to Air Vice Marshal Chaminda Wickremaratne at the Air Force Headquarters today and conveyed his best wishes to the newly appointed Deputy Chief of Staff.
Air Vice Marshal Chaminda Wickramaratne, is a distinguished alumnus of Royal College, Colombo. His journey in the Sri Lanka Air Force commenced on 04 October 1989, when he enrolled as an Officer Cadet in the 21st Intake of Officer Cadets. Demonstrating exceptional dedication and proficiency, he successfully completed a series of demanding courses, including the Officer Cadets' Basic Combat Course, the No. 15th Regiment Officer Cadets Branch Training Course, as well as the Basic and Advanced Administrative Courses at the prestigious Sri Lanka Air Force Station Diyatalawa and Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay, respectively. On 17 July 1992, following the conclusion of his training, he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Administrative Regiment Branch, marking the formal commencement of his distinguished career as a commissioned officer.
His distinguished career is complemented by a wealth of academic achievements. Among his notable accomplishments are the completion of the Junior Command and Staff Course in both India and Sri Lanka, along with the Methods of Instruction Course in India. His pursuit of academic excellence further extended to earning a Master in Defence Studies from the esteemed state University of Kelaniya. Notably, his scholarly endeavours were recognized with the prestigious "Golden Pen" award for presenting the finest research paper upon graduating from the Defence Services Command and Staff College Sri Lanka in 2010. In 2013, he further enriched his academic array by attaining a MA in Security Studies (Civil-Military Relations) from the esteemed Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, USA. Demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, Air Vice Marshal Wickramaratne graduated from the esteemed National Defence University in Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2021, further solidifying his position as a leader and scholar in the field of national security.
Throughout his career, he has carved out a notable role in the field of parachuting within the Sri Lanka Air Force, complementing his distinguished ground combat career. He has undergone airborne training at the Special Services Parachute Training School of the Pakistan Army, showcasing his excellence as a pioneer officer in parachuting for the SLAF. With a diverse skill set, including skydiving, parachute rigging and Jump Master qualifications, he has garnered extensive experience both domestically and internationally. His leadership as Chairman of SLAF Parachuting has been instrumental in advancing the discipline within the organization for many years since 2010. His participation in international events such as the World Military Parachute Championships in Algeria and Germany, along with recognition through SLAF Colours in 2004, attests to his exceptional contributions. Additionally, his status as a qualified CISM/FAI International Parachute Judge underscores his expertise and leadership in the field of parachuting.

In the field of training, he has displayed his excellence in training both airmen and officer cadets and has held many important instructor appointments in SLAF training establishments. Progressing through various roles, he has been held the appointment of Provost Marshal at AFHQ and the Director General Ground Operations before being appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the SLAF. Further, he is the current Chairman of SLAF Cricket.
