420 University Students Pass Out From SLAF Diyatalawa

Future is in Disciplined Hands
A much discussed and debated, programme of training pre-University students within the military to inculcate leadership qualities concluded today (10th June 2011) on successful completion of the training at Sri Lanka Air Force Diyatalawa.
On 23rd May 2011, SLAF Station Diyatalawa welcomed 221 girls and 199 boys, all university qualified students, to the programme on Leadership Development. The Students and their parents were received by officials who addressed them giving polite instructions which helped them resolve all doubts in this unfamiliar environment. Thus, it resulted in the parents taking leave of their children reassured that this opportunity would undoubtedly mold their children to be better and valuable citizens of this Nation.
The three weeks training program was conducted as per the programme by the Ministry of Defence in liaison with the Ministry of higher education. The 3 weeks leadership program embraced physical training , under the theme sound bodies build sound minds, drill - to inculcate the value of working to one command and to follow orders, lectures on the law of the land - to make them understand the path they should walk stay on, self hygiene and first aid – essential in any walk of life, history to help self discover, customs, ethics and norms of society to help face future environments and most importantly leadership development activities as well as games to mould talented leaders. Throughout the stay there, the students were given good care, security, knowledge, medical facilities and the feeling of belonging to one single family.
Spending the last hours of this unforgettable period, the students thanked the Commanding Officer, Officers and other ranks for teaching them lessons of a life time. They especially highlighted the way they learned to mould their leadership abilities in coordination with their fellow students. The Commanding Officer, Group Captain Janaka Amarasinghe thanked the Secretary of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksha and the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama for giving SLAF Diyatalawa a chance to contribute to the future of the country in yet another way. The function ended with a camp fire with music provided by the SLAF Beat Group ‘Eagles’. This was followed by a variety show presented by the students using talents which they had and which they developed during this period.
The entire training is being carried out under the guidance of the Station Commanding Officer Group Captain Janaka Amarasinghe who has been well supported by Squadron Leader Kanishka Jayasekara, Squadron Leader Chandana Munasinghe and other Officers and other ranks of SLAF Station Diyatalawa.
