PRESS BRIEFING ON 'GUWAN HAMUDA PAPEDI SAWARIYA 2025'

The press briefing on "Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2025” was held today (24 February 2025) at the Air Force Headquarters. This year’s race will be conducted for the 26th consecutive time in concurrence with the 74th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Over Hundred and Seventy Five (175) upper-grade cyclists and other cyclists including foreign cyclists are expected to compete in this race. Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya is recognized as one of the premier and most thrilling events in the Sri Lankan Cycling calendar.

This year, the duration of the men’s race will be 3 days. It will start on 28 February 2025, from Air Force Station Weerawila, passing each leg through Rathnapura, Kandy and ending in Galle Face with a distance of approximately 414 km, while the women’s race will commence on 02 March 2025, as a single-leg event from Meerigama to Colombo.
 
The awards ceremony will be held in “Riffle Green” of Sri Lanka Air Force Station, Colombo   on 02 March 2025, where the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, will grace the occasion with the sponsors and other distinguished guests.

The press briefing was chaired by the Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Indika Wickramasinghe, while Director General Sports of Ministry of Sports Prof. Rear Admiral (Retd) Shemal Fernando, Director Media of SLAF and Secretary of Air Force Sports Council, Group Captain Eranda Geeganage, Secretary SLAF Cycling, Group Captain Ranga Perera and General Manager Abans PLC, Mr. Chamila Janaranga, participated as panel members. A large number of journalists from the electronic and print media were also present at the occasion.

The main sponsor of the race this year is Abans Group of Companies and Peoples Insurance will be the official Insurance Partner while Maliban Biscuit Manufactories Private Limited will be the official nutrition Partner. The spectators will have the opportunity of experiencing this thrilling event live on Channel Eye as well as the opportunity to listen to live updates through the Hiru FM radio channel this year.

Before the conclusion of press briefing, the sponsorship cheques and official letters were handed over to the Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Indika Wickramasinghe respectively by General Manager Abans PLC, Mr. Chamila Janaranga, Brand Manager Maliban Vitagen, Mr. Dayan Munathanthri and Head of Operations People’s Insurance PLC, Mr. Channa Abeywickrama.
