26TH GUWAN HAMUDA PAPEDI SAWARIYA FLAGGED OFF IN WEERAWILA

The Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2025, the 26th edition of the race, was flagged off this morning (28 February 2025) in front of SLAF Station Weerawila by the Director General Air Operations and former Chairman Air Force Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera. The moment was attended by Director General Sports, Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando. This year’s race, which commenced today, is conducted in line with the 74th anniversary.
The Men's race that commenced this morning, in which over one hundred and fifty males, including both locals and foreigners, specifically a five-manned team representing Indian Air Force, participated, is scheduled to complete its first lap at Rathnapura, covering a distance of 145 km. The race will be concluded on 02 March 2025 in Colombo after the completion of three laps in three days.
The Women’s race will commence at Meerigama on 02 March 2025 and be scheduled to conclude in Colombo, covering a distance of approximately 86 km. The route for the Women’s race will pass through Giriulla, Dankotuwa, Ja-Ela to the endpoint.
The main sponsor for the 26th Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya is Abans Group of Company while Peoples Insurance as the official Insurance Partner and "Vitagen" Maliban Biscuit Manufactories Private Limited as the official Nutrition partner. The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Channel Eye is the Official Electronic Media Partner and Hiru FM is the Official Radio Partner. The entire race telecasts live on Channel Eye. This is the only Cycle Race in Sri Lanka that features the entire race live through a Bell-212 helicopter, along with Sri Lanka Rupavihini Corporation.
The awards ceremony will be held on 02 March 2025 at the Riffle Green Grounds on a grand scale.
This year’s race was organized by SLAF Cycling under the leadership of Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Indika Wickremasinghe and under the coordination of Secretary SLAF Cycling, Group Captain Ranga Perera.
