AIR VICE MARSHAL CHANDANA GEETHAPRIYA BIDS ADIEU TO THE SRI LANKA AIR FORCE

Air Vice Marshal Chandana Geethapriya USP, MSc (Sec & Strat Std), BSc (Def Stu), ndc,psc, bid adieu to the Sri Lanka Air Force yesterday (05 March 2025), after completing 35 years of dedicated service to the nation. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointment of Director General Constructions Engineering of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

Air Vice Marshal Geethapriya made an official farewell call on the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, at his office. The Commander commended him for his dedicated service rendered to the nation and to the Sri Lanka Air Force in particular. The Commander also emphasized that he was one of the key stakeholders during times of need for our motherland and that his heroic history will remain etched in the annals of the SLAF. The Commander and Air Vice Marshal Geethapriya exchanged mementos to mark the occasion.

Subsequently, he was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of Honour by the SLAF Colour Wing before departing from Air Force Headquarters at Defence Headquarters Complex for the last time.

In recognition of the outstanding service rendered to the nation, the Farewell Dinner was graciously hosted in honour of Air Vice Marshal Geethapriya with the presence of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe along with Chairperson SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe and the members of the Air Force Board of Management. This momentous occasion took place at the Air Force Officers' Mess in Colombo.

Air Vice Marshal Chandana Geethapriya, joined the Sri Lanka Air Force as an Officer Cadet to the 8th Intake of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Ratmalana on 03 November 1990. He attained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Defence Studies) from the Kotelawala Defence University and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 14 November 1992 in the Branch of Civil Engineering.

He commenced his military career as an Electrical Engineer from the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Wing SLAF Base Katunayake and seamlessly ascended through the ranks. He has been entrusted with many key appointments such as the Officer Commanding works of SLAF Base Ratmalana and SLAF Base Vavuniya.  Further, optimizing his efforts towards the effective functioning of the Directorate, he held critical appointments of Staff Officer Civil Engineering II, Staff Officer Civil Engineering I and Senior Staff Officer Civil Engineering. He also held the appointment of Commanding Officer of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Wing SLAF Base Katunayake playing a dynamic role in its operations and development. Under his leadership and guidance, many notable achievements were made including the “Most Outstanding Research Team” awarded in 2015 and the gold medal for the innovative Airfield lighting system at the “Sahasak Nimavum” competition organized by the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission in 2016.  Advancing into the roles of strategic leadership, he held the appointment of Director Construction Engineering Personnel and Planning and assumed the duties of Director General Construction Engineering of Sri Lanka Air Force.

Air Vice Marshal Geethapriya successfully completed his Basic Combat Training and Basic Administration Training at the Combat Training School at Diyatalawa in 1992. He has successfully completed many professional trainings, including the Junior Command and Staff Course at the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay, the Senior Command and Staff Course in Defence Service Command & Staff College Sapugaskanda and the Master of Science in National Security & Strategic Studies at the Kotelawala Defence University. Further, he earned the distinguished title “ndc” from the National Defence College, the highest seat of strategic learning for officers of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces.

For his distinguished service, he has been awarded the “Uttama Seva Padakkama”. In addition, he holds the appointment of Chairman for the Sri Lanka Air Force Tug of War and has been awarded sports colours for Rugby at the Kotelawala Defence University.
