
SLAF ADVANCES INDIGENOUS UAV DEVELOPMENT WITH VIMANA SII

The SLAF has achieved a significant step in indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) development of the Vimana SII surveillance drone. Developed by the Aeronautical Research and Development Wing (AR&DW) at SLAF Station Katukurunda under the supervision of the Commanding Officer of AR&DW, Group Captain Manjula Abeywickrama, since 2024.
The official handover ceremony took place today (28 March 2025) with the participation of engineering officers and technicians from AR&DW, along with representatives from No. 27 Regiment Wing at SLAF Base Ratmalana. Designed to enhance reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, the Vimana SII will provide critical intelligence support for security operations conducted by No. 27 Regiment Wing at SLAF Base Ratmalana, further strengthening the Air Force’s operational effectiveness.
