SLAF AGRO UNIT PARTICIPATES IN GLOBAL DAY FOR THE MITIGATION OF DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT

The SLAF Agro Unit participated in the Global Day for the Mitigation of Desertification and Drought, held yesterday (17 June 2025) at Sobadaham Piyasa, Ministry of Environment. The event was graced by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Environment, Mr. Anton Jayakodi as the Chief Guest.
A delegation of SLAF officers, led by the Commanding Officer of the Agro Unit, Group Captain Daminda Samaratunga attended the event with the aim of promoting the “Guwan Kapruka” programme, an initiative by the SLAF Agro Unit dedicated to advancing sustainable agricultural practices.
As part of the event, Wing Commander Prasanna Rupasinghe delivered an informative lecture on the significance of coconut cultivation, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into establishing and managing a successful plantation. The session also included a hands-on demonstration on land preparation and the planting of coconut seedlings.
In line with the “Guwan Kapruka” programme, 400 coconut saplings were distributed among individuals committed to the development of coconut cultivation across the country.
