Tri Service Contingent Bags Two Bronze Medals at the 5th Military World Games

The tri-service team comprising athletes from the Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Navy bagged two bronze medals in the 4x100 M (Men’s) and the 4x400 M (Women’s) event at the 05th Military World Games held at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from 15th to 24th July 2011.
7000 competitors took part in these games from more than 100 countries. A 72 member team represented the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka at the games. The SLAF contingent included AVM Anura Silva as Judo team captain, Air Commodore A.P. Abeysekara as coach athletics team, Air Commodore Harsha Fernando as Deputy Chef De Mission, Wing Commander Padman Costha as Volleyball team captain and Squadron Leader MCM Fernando as the Womens Volleyball team coach.
Airman Ranil Jayawardana was part of the team that won the first Bronze being placed third in the 4 X 100 whilst Corporal Chandrika Rasnayaka contributed to the second Bronze medal in the 4 X 400 relay and just missed another Bronze by few seconds in the 400m race.
