POLLINATOR GARDEN DECLARED OPEN AT SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE

“Pollinator Garden,” a proactive initiative of the SLAF to support ecological health, biodiversity, and conservation by providing habitats, food, and shelter for pollinators, was created by the Agro Unit of SLAF Base Katunayake. It was declared open today (10 April 2026) by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, along with the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe.

This garden has been designed with the aim of cultivating specific nectar- and pollen-producing plants that attract pollinators such as butterflies, bees, insects, and birds. Through this project, it is expected to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting natural pollinators in order to support biodiversity, vital habitats and thriving wildlife.

As another feature of the event, a coconut cultivation programme named ‘Wings Over Kapruka’ was organized, highlighting the planting of coconut saplings to promote sustainable agriculture.

The SLAF Pollinator Garden will soon be opened for educational programmes for university and school students.
