DIRECTOR GENERAL CONSTRUCTIONS ENGINEERING OF THE SLAF APPOINTED

Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana was appointed as the Director General Constructions Engineering of the Sri Lanka Air Force, with effect from today (19 May 2026). The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, officially handed over the letter of appointment to Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana at the Air Force Headquarters today and conveyed his best wishes to the newly appointed Director General Constructions Engineering.  
 
Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana is a distinguished alumnus of Ananda Maithreya Central College, Balangoda. He commenced his military carrier on 08 December 1997 as a Direct Entry Commissioned Officer in the rank of Pilot Officer, joining the Construction Engineering Branch of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Upon successful completion of his initial military training at the Combat Training School, Diyatalawa, he was posted to the Air Force Academy, China Bay.

He has obtained his professional and postgraduate qualifications, most notably the National Diploma in Technology in Mechanical Engineering Technology at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka (1996), Graduateship in Mechanical Engineering at City & Guilds, London, UK (2012), Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing Management at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka (2011), and Master of Business Administration at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (2011).

Throughout his career, Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana has undergone extensive local and international military training programmes, enhancing his leadership, technical expertise, and managerial capabilities. Most notable among these are Leadership and Managerial Skills Development for Engineers Course (2001), Professional Certificate in Premises Management Course (2002), Management and Leadership Development (MLD) at Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (2004), Course on International Humanitarian Law (ICRC) (2004), Course on Law of Armed Conflict & Customary Law of the Air (ICRC) (2004), and the Junior Command and Staff Course conducted at Air Force Acadamy China Bay (2004).

Further, he broadened his academic and professional scope with a Diploma in International Relations (2008), Counselling for Managers (2009), Employee Performance Appraisal Course at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (2009), and a Diploma in Information Technology at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

Moreover, he has undergone specialized technical training, including courses on Design Principles of Wastewater Collection, Treatment, Disposal/Reuse & Storm Water Drainage Systems, as well as Wastewater Collection, Treatment, and Disposal (2013). His international exposure includes the Junior Commanders’ Course in the Indian Air Force (2004), Machinery and Equipment Training Programme in China (2009), and participation in the PACAF Silver Flag Partner Nation 20-01 Contingency Course, United States Air Force, Guam (2020).

Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana holds memberships as a Member of the Institution of Incorporated Engineers Sri Lanka (MIIE SL) (since 2009), Member of the Institute of Management of Sri Lanka (MIM SL) (since 2009), and is an Ordinary Member of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (MSLIM) (since 2022).

Air Commodore Krishantha Hewapathirana’s dedication, professionalism, and distinguished service have been recognized through numerous military decorations. These include the Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal with First Clasp, North Humanitarian Campaign Medal, and the Sewa Padakkama.

Over the course of his career, he has held several key appointments reflecting his leadership and technical expertise, including Director Civil, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering at the Directorate of Construction Engineering Air Force Head Quarters Colombo, Commanding Officer Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Wing, Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake and Staff Officer Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Directorate of Construction Engineering Air Force Head Quarters Colombo. He has also held appointments such as Officer Commanding Works Squadron and Works Engineer at the Air Force Academy China Bay, as well as at several Bases and Stations.
