SLAF Katukurunda Celebrates 27th Anniversary

Sri Lanka Air Force Unit Katukurunda celebrated their 27th anniversary on the 16th November 2011.
SLAF Katukurunda was established in 1943 as the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Katukurunda (HMS Ukussa) by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, under the Command of Capt G.A. (HANK) Rotherham. At the time it was the largest Royal Navy Air Station with a staff of 300 Officers, 3000 Sailors and 100 Women from the Women’s Royal Naval Service. It also serviced more than 100 Aircraft at any given time within the Aircraft repair yard.
This Royal Naval Air Station was reactivated on 16th November 1984 as the Sri Lanka Air Force Unit Katukurunda under the Command of Flt Lt S. Edissooriya. The runway presently provides flight training facilities for local and foreign civil flying schools.
The Commanding Officer Wing Commander Suharshie Fernando inspected the working parade which gave start to the day. The working parade was followed by the Commanding Officer’s address in which he appreciated the efforts of all Officers, Airmen, Airwomen and Civilians of the Unit.
A tree planting campaign within the camp premises was conducted to make the day memorable and a sports event was conducted with the participation of unit personnel followed by an all ranks lunch.
