“The Spirit Of Christmas” An Evening Of Christmas Splendour With Carols

In keeping with the concept of the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Neelika Abeywickrema to showcase the Sri Lanka Air Force through the family members of the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel, held the fourth such event; “The Spirit of Christmas”, an evening of Christmas splendour with carols and nativity on 19th December 2011 at the Defence Services College Auditorium which was virtually converted into a ‘Winter City’.
The glamorously organized evening was graced by the First Lady, Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapakshe as the Chief Guest and Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, the Commander of the Air Force and Mrs. Neelika Abeywickrama Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit as Guests of Honour.
The Choir consisting of Officers, Airmen/ Airwomen, Wives and Children of Air Force personnel and family members of those who were killed in action, with the youngest member of Choir being just seven years old, was indeed a representation of the ‘Air Force Family’. The Choir was trained and conducted by Mr. Shehan Wijemanna and consisted of a variety of popular carols to the likes of; ‘So this is Christmas’, ‘Winter Wonder Land’, ‘Silent Night’, ‘Feliz Navidad’,' සිනු හඩින් ', ' කලකට ' පෙර '.
The performance also included carols by a Quartet consisting of Air Cdre JSI Wijemanna, Gp Capt AWE Wijesuriya, Wg Cdr MDAG Seneviratne & Plt Off GV Joseph, Solo performances by Mr. Shehan Wijemanna and by Aircraftsman Denishka of the SLAF Band, who sang ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ with a dance performance by the ‘Blue Dancers’.
The Orchestra of the SLAF Band, conducted by Fg Off LDM Warnakulasuriya supported the choir with the elegant music.
The kids of the SLAF Pre-school took turns to walk on stage for each song as part of the ‘Nativity’ and Rudolph together with five Reindeer took to the stage to perform for ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’. ‘Santa Clause’ was also in town that night, in the ‘Winter City’ at the Defence Services College Auditorium.
The performance was viewed by an audience of nearly 600 in an auditorium which was filled to capacity and viewed live on www.airforce.lk.
