Women’s Football Team of the Sri
Lanka Air Force emerged Champions at the 2012 Women’s Open Football
Championship organized by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) on
24 June 2012 beating the powerful SL Army Team by 1-0 at the finals.
The Captain of the Air Force Team, VAW/01588 AC Angela TK, was adjudged
the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
In honour of this achievement, the Team and the Coach were
felicitated by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha
Abeywickrama, at a simple ceremony held at the AFHQ Auditorium this
morning; 28 June 2012. Chairman of the Air Force Football, Air Vice
Marshal Jayanath Kumarasiri, Secretary Air Force Football, Group Captain
Saman Kotage and Secretary Air Force Sports Council, Group Captain
Roshan Biyanwila, also attended the
ceremony.
SLAF’s Women’s Football has a short history of only two
years with the women’s pool coming into being only in July 2010.
However, the standards of the team developed at a rapid pace and, within
a year, they showed outstanding results of their extreme commitment by
becoming the Runners-up of this same Championship last year. This
resulted in three players being drafted to the National Women’s Football
Pool for the year 2011. Following their impressive victory in the
Championship this year, eight players have been drafted to the National
Pool.
Apart from the remarkable commitment and prowess of the
players themselves, much is owed to the Coach, 15844 Flight Sergeant
Bogahawatta, and the management of the Air Force
Football.
