Inaugural Inter Unit Golf Championship 2013

Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay secured the overall championship at the inaugural Inter Unit golf tournament held at the Sri Lanka Air Force’s own Golf Links in the picturesque settings of China Bay yesterday ( 21st December 2013).
The game consisted of 18 holes one round match and a total of 42 players participated in the tournament. Leading aircraftsman Bandara, Leading aircraftsman Indunil and Leading aircraftsman Wijenayake displayed their skills in such fashion that enabled the SLAF Academy China Bay clinch the Championship with 102 points. Securing the runner up berth in this championship with 91 points was SLAF Base Anuradhapura where their 'B' team comprising Wing Commander Jayawardana, Wing Commander Maheepala and Sergeant Krishantha were adjudged the winners. It was SLAF Base Ratmalana that walked away with the second runner up award obtaining 87 points. The winning competitors of the team were Flight Sergeant Wijethilake, Sergeant Rohana and Leading aircraftsman Madushan.
Meanwhile, the open segment that added glamour to the event produced three more winners where Leading aircraftsman Wijesekara (42 points) from the SLAF Base Vavniya won the plum while Leading aircraftsman Madushanka (38 points) of SLAF Base Ratmalana and Leading aircraftsman Gamage (36 points) of SLAF Base Katunayake walked away with the second and third positions respectively in open segment of the tournament.
Yet another significant feature of the tourney was the selection of the winners in two other categories of the sport alongside this competition. Thus Leading aircraftsman Wijesiri from SLAF Academy China Bay was adjudged the winner closet to the pin on the basis where he put his tee-shot closest to the flagstick at the designated ninth hole, while Leading aircraftsman Bandara from SLAF Base Anuradhapura who drove the ball to the farthest position secured the title for the best player with the longest drive.
The challenge was spiced up with enjoyable and unique rounds of golf on Bermuda grass fairways comprising a 18 hole course with remote sand bunkers, roughs and of course doglegs right and left. The golfers however, rose to the challenge and displayed excellent performance throughout the tournament. Veteran golfer Mr. Shiran Manukulasooriya officiated as the Director of the tournament.
The awards were given away at the closing ceremony held at Eagles’ Club House of the Eagles’ Golf Links during the evening of the same day. The Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama was present at the links and at the evening's awards ceremony to watch the golfers in action and to give away the awards as the Chief Guest. The Commander addressing the gathering following the award ceremony whilst congratulating the winners invited the players among all ranks to take up the sport which shall bring in many benefits on the part of the players in shaping their future and in bringing pride to the organization.
