The biggest challenge confronting anyone posted to SLAF Base Katunayake, the largest air base in the SLAF, is how to get about within the large expanse of the former coconut plantation turned Air Base.  Considering the percentage of the Air Force employed and living there, a viable solution to this problem is indeed a matter worthy of note and interest.

It was with this in mind that the Base Commander Katunayake, initiated measures to implement an Internal Liberty Run with the whole hearted support and cooperation of the Director General Engineering, AVM LHA De Silva.

The Liberty, utilizing a Mitsubishi Rosa Coach was launched on the 63rd Anniversary of the SLAF, Sunday 2nd March 2014.  

The Liberty will start from the 20th Mile post on a daily basis and will benefit all the other personnel, families and visitors of SLAF Base Katunayake.  The Coach, that had been long unserviceable at the MT Section, was repaired as a project with funds from the SIF, thanks to the untiring efforts of the OCTS, MTO and O I/C Com Res H/Vehicle Pool and their staff within a short period of time.

All formation Commanding Officers and personnel of SLAF Base Katunayake were present to witness the inauguration of this welfare project by the Base Commander of SLAF Base Katunayake.
