Air Force Iranamadu Celebrates Her First Anniversary

The Sri Lanka Air Force Iranamadu celebrated its first anniversary yesterday (21st June 2010) with a day full of social activities.
Iranamadu is a name synonymous with which was once the most brutal terrorist organisation in the world, until liberated in early 2009. The terrorist air strip had become a key strong hold of the LTTE and had been densely mined and booby-trapped. SLAF Iranamadu was established on 21st June 2009, Squadron Leader Haily Rupasinghe of the SLAF Regiment is the first Officer Commanding of this unit.
Today SLAF Iranamadu is home to primarily Officers and other ranks of the Air Force Regiment field squadrons. Extensive de-mining work is being carried out to clear the land in and around for rapid resettlement of displaced civilians.
A medical camp and several programs were conducted to mark the occasion at the Ramanathapuram Central College. A free dental and medical clinic run by the Air Force drew large crowds of people. Several wheelchairs were donated to differently able civilians and to those who were disabled by war. One of the six wheelchairs was gifted to a six year old boy who was injured by indiscriminate mortar fire by the LTTE.
Stationery items and school bags were donated to some 350 students at the school. The students of Ramanathapuram Central College displayed their artistic talents at a colorful concert held to mark the occasion. The Air Force band entertained the villages to an evening of song and music bringing joy and laughter to part of the country which once only knew terror and war.
The Commanding Officer Squadron Haily Rupasinghe graced the occasion as the chief guest where religious leaders and government officials took hand with the all officers and other ranks and made a valuable contribution to this event.Also Mr. Charith Mahendrarajah (Head of Business Development) of Janashakthi Re-came forward to assist and support this valuable cause in his personnel capacity.
