ECO FRIENDLY VESAK CELEBRATION BY SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE

SLAF Base Katunayake conducted series of programmes to celebrate Vesak yesterday, (15 May 2022) giving priority to environment friendly Green Concepts, under the supervision and guidance of the Base Commander SLAF Base Katunayake, Air Commodore Lasitha Sumanaweera.
The celebration started with the planting of 28 Bo trees at the Base temple signifying the trees under the shade of which the 28 Buddhas attained supreme intelligence.

It was followed by a ‘Dharma Sermon’ conducted by the Ven. Kaikawala Gnyanathrupthi Thero, the Chief incumbent of Gonawalana Janajayagama temple and deputy Principle of Kanaoya Mahasen Maha Vidyalaya. The event organized at the Sport Arena complex at the Base, for all service personnel and their families.
After the ‘Dharma Sermon’ programme, an Environment Friendly ‘Vesak Zone’ was officially declared opened by the Base Commander at the Base hospital, replete with colourful Vesak lanterns designed by the various formations and sections of the Base. All Vesak Lanterns in the main guard room and Base Headquarter area are illuminated by batteries which are recharged by ‘Solar Panels’ in order to minimize and save electricity due to the prevailing economic crisis in the country.
As a continuation of the ‘Vesak Programme’ and under the guidance of Chairperson SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Charmini Pathirana, a donation programme of distributing dry rations for 13 low income families living closer to the Base, was conducted successfully at the Sport Arena complex under the supervision of the Base Commander and President Seva Vanitha Unit SLAF Base Katunayake, Mrs. Thushanthi Sumanaweera today (16 May 2022).
