SLAF STATION MORAWEWA CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SERIES OF COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVES

SLAF Station Morawewa commemorated its 50th anniversary by engaging social welfare through a series of community service initiatives aimed at uplifting local schools, preserving the environment, supporting healthcare facilities and promoting interreligious harmony.
On the 23 July 2023, the Sri Lanka Air Force Station Morawewa took part in Shramadhana campaigns, focusing on improving the learning environments of three local schools. Morawewa South Sinhala School, Morawewa North Sinhala School, and Namalwaththa Nallakutti Muslim School were the beneficiaries of this initiative. The Station personnel are actively engaged in cleaning and renovating the school premises to create a pleasant atmosphere for the students. This collective effort not only involved teachers but also received support from community members residing in the villages where these schools are situated. Over 220 children as a total are benefited from the enhanced facilities, promoting a better educational experience for the young learners.
Recognizing the importance of protecting the coastal ecosystem, the SLAF Station Morawewa organized a beach cleaning event at Nilaweli Beach on 24 July 2023. Collaborating with local environmental authorities and residents, the personnel cleared the litter and debris from the beach, promoting responsible tourism and safeguarding marine life.
Taking their dedication to saving lives further, the Station personnel actively participated in a blood donation campaign on 25 July 2023. A total of 100 personnel donated blood, contributing to the national blood bank and potentially saving numerous lives during emergencies

On 26 July 2023, the Station extended its philanthropic efforts to hospitals in the area. Shramadana programmes were conducted at Gomarankadawala Hospital, Mahadiwulwewa Divisional Hospital and Morawewa Preliminary Medical Care Unit to create a more hygienic environment for patients. The programmes involved cleaning and other activities to ensure a comfortable atmosphere for the approximately 250 patients receiving treatment each day.
Embracing the rich history of religious diversity, SLAF Station Morawewa organized another Shramadana campaign on 27 July 2023. With a resolute commitment to encouraging interreligious harmony, the Station reached out to three religious places, namely, Namalwaththa Mohidin Jummah Mosque, St. Anthony’s Church Morawewa, and Pankulam Pulleyar Hindu Kovil. The exciting participation of the personnel illustrated the essence of coexistence that Sri Lanka holds, leaving behind a trail of kindness and respect for all faiths.
To commemorate the 78 fallen war heroes during the Humanitarian Operations while posted to this Station, an Alms Giving Ceremony was held on 28 July 2023, with the participation of 50 Buddhist monks. The ceremony paid tribute to the sacrifices made by these heroes while invoking blessings to the whole Air Force.
