SLAF USHERS IN THE NEW YEAR 2024

On the first working day of 2024, the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, delivered his New Year's address to the Air Force Board of Management, all officers, other ranks and civilian staff of Air Force Headquarters, SLAF Station Colombo, and all Air Force establishments. The address, streamed live to all SLAF establishments, took place at the newly inaugurated Air Force Headquarters in the Defence Headquarters Complex, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte.

Commencing his speech, the Commander extended warm wishes to all SLAF members and their families. He emphasized the SLAF's focus in 2024 on enhancing capabilities through the modernization of the air defence mechanism and the integration of advanced technology. The primary objective is to secure the nation's airspace and ensure the smooth operation of peaceful flights. Acknowledging the evolving global security landscape, the Air Force recognizes the need to adapt to modern warfare techniques, mentioning conflicts like Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine.

The Commander mentioned efforts to integrate granted aircraft from the United States and Australia, such as Beechcraft KA 360ER and KA 350, alongside the procurement of C-130s and upgraded Kfirs. Emphasizing maritime security in response to recent incidents, the Air Force aims to utilize technology to safeguard national boundaries. The Y-12 aircraft will be deployed for scheduled flights, benefiting Air Force members and their families.

The Commander highlighted the priority of contributing to international peacekeeping operations, particularly in the Central African Republic and Yemen. The Air Force plans to share operational expertise globally to stimulate national economic development. On the domestic front, welfare initiatives are expanding, including increased benefits for Gagana Viru Saviya, augmented death donations and continued support for children's education. Essential school materials are provided at discounted rates and plans for scholarships for higher education are in progress. Housing projects for Air Force members are extended to improve living conditions. Financial assistance for special training courses is expanded, with additional opportunities for both local and foreign training envisioned.

To ensure a successful 2024, the Commander emphasized the importance of teamwork, discipline and efficient administration. Members were encouraged to work together in overcoming challenges for the collective advancement of the organization.
