NO. 8 TACTICAL TRANSPORT SQUADRON ENHANCES AIRCREW PREPAREDNESS OVER WATER

The No 8 Tactical Transport Squadron conducted a comprehensive dinghy drill training session which is conducted for aircrew personnel yesterday (26 January 2024) at Mt. Lavinia Beach. This exercise, held quarterly, was overseen by Acting Director Flight Safety and Base Commander SLAF Base Ratmalana, Air Commodore Asela Jayasekera. The coordination of the training initiative was managed by the Commanding Officer of No. 8 Squadron, Wing Commander TP De Silva, ensuring adherence to standards and the overall success of the training.

The primary focus of the training session was on emergency ditching procedures, dinghy operations, and familiarization with naval survival equipment. In this exercise, 11 pilots and 6 aircrew members demonstrated their dedication to safety and operational readiness. Six Coast Guard instructors played a vital role in sharing their expertise and facilitating effective training. The presence of Air Force life savers and medical personnel ensured the well-being of participants throughout the training.

Aircrew members actively participated in hands-on emergency ditching scenarios, simulating real-life situations. Emphasis was placed on quick and effective response measures during an emergency water landing. The training included detailed instructions on the proper deployment and operation of dinghies in various conditions, enhancing the aircrew's proficiency in handling and maneuvering life-saving devices.

The training also provided comprehensive insights into the use of naval survival equipment, ensuring aircrew familiarity with essential tools for survival at sea. Aircrew members received education on facing high tides and rough sea conditions. Practical demonstrations equipped participants with the skills to navigate challenges associated with adverse weather and sea states.

The Dinghy Drill Training conducted at Mt. Lavinia Beach was deemed a resounding success, providing aircrew members with crucial skills for emergency situations over water. The collaboration with the Sri Lanka Coast Guards and the involvement of experienced instructors significantly contributed to the overall effectiveness of the training. This initiative reinforces the commitment of the No. 8 Tactical Transport Squadron to ensuring the highest standards of safety and preparedness among its aircrew.
