SRI LANKA SPORTS FIESTA 2024 CONCLUDES WITH THRILLING AIR FORCE COMMANDER’S CUP RUGBY TOURNAMENT

The Sri Lanka Sports Fiesta 2024, a collaborative initiative by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism, concluded today (18 August 2024) with a grand ceremony at the Race Course Ground in Colombo. The event, which took place from 16 to 18 August 2024, brought together over 3,000 athletes competing across seven dynamic team sports: cricket, rugby, football, volleyball, netball, hockey, and basketball. The Awarding Ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Advisor to the President on Tourism, Land, Sports and Youth Affairs, Hon. Harin Fernando and the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa. The event was also attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Mr. Kanapathipillai Mahesan, Director General Sports and Youth Affairs, Prof. Rear Admiral Shamal Fernando, Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Wickremaratne, Deputy Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Muditha Mahawattage, members of the Air Force Board of Management, other stakeholders and sports enthusiasts who gathered to witness the rugby finals and the awards presentation.
The Air Force Commander’s Cup Rugby Tournament, a standout feature of the Fiesta, commenced on 16 August 2024. This year’s tournament showcased intense competition among top ‘A’ Division men’s clubs, including CR & FC, Havelocks SC, CH & FC, Army SC, Navy SC, Air Force SC and Police SC. The women’s category was equally competitive, with the teams from Navy SC, Air Force SC and CR & FC contending for the top honours. Additionally, the tournament featured a Schools Under-16 category, with 14 schools participating, further emphasizing the event's role in nurturing emerging rugby talent.
In the Women’s Cup Final, Sri Lanka Navy triumphed, securing the championship title, while the Air Force team earned the runners-up position. In the Under-16 Championship Cup Final, Wesley College emerged victorious in a thrilling contest against Isipathana Vidyalaya. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Cup Final battle, the Sri Lanka Police B team clinched the Championship, with CR&FC finishing as the runners-up.
