The Sri Lanka Air Force Station Morawewa has actively contributed to the nationwide elephant census conducted by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) in Sri Lanka from 17 to 19 August 2024.
A total of 21 Air Force personnel participated in this comprehensive survey alongside DWC staff and volunteers, covering the Morawewa area as one of the 3,100 survey centers across the island. The census, which focused on counting elephants at designated water holes, follows the last survey conducted in 2011, which recorded a total of 5,879 elephants.
This latest census is expected to provide vital data to support ongoing efforts to conserve Sri Lanka’s elephant population and enhance wildlife management practices across the country.
