EAGLE’S CUP HANDBALL TOURNAMENT - 2024 CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

The 3rd edition of Eagle’s Cup Handball Tournament was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo from 17 to 20 November 2024. The finals and awards ceremony, held today (20 November 2024), was graced by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, as the Chief Guest. This highly anticipated event brought together a total of nine teams in the men’s division and six teams in the women’s division, comprising players from the tri-service handball teams, other local handball clubs and school-level handball clubs.
In the Women’s Team Championship, the SLAF emerged victorious, showcasing exceptional strategy and coordination throughout the tournament. The Sri Lanka Army secured the runner-up position. In the Men’s Championship, the Sri Lanka Army triumphed after a thrilling final that culminated in a penalty shootout.
The men’s final witnessed an intense battle between the Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy teams, with both sides scoring 38 points at the end of regulation time. In the ensuing penalty shootout, the Sri Lanka Army team clinched victory, displaying remarkable composure under pressure. Meanwhile, the women’s final saw the Sri Lanka Air Force team defeat the Sri Lanka Army team with a decisive score of 22-18.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff, members of the Air Force Board of Management, the Chairman of SLAF Handball, Air Vice Marshal Rajinth Jayawardena, the President Sri Lanka Handball Federation, Mr. Upali Rajapakse, members of the Air Force Sports Council, officers from the sister services and other distinguished guests, who were present to witness the finals and awards presentation.
