Ranaviry Real star culminates in Exuberance

The much awaited singing extravaganza in the island, ‘Ranaviru Real Star’ culminated with the crowning of Commander Damian Fernando of the Sri Lanka Navy yesterday (29th May 2011) at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
Under the patronage and the instructions of the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksha, the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Dialog Private Limited paved the way to bring out the hidden talents of the servicemen/ women.
Over 25000 competitors from the Tri services applied for the first ever military reality program, which initially auditioned up to 500 service personnel including 300 from the Army, 125 from Navy and 75 from Sri Lanka Air Force. This 500 eventually was filtered to the best 24 personnel where they had the opportunity of displaying their vocal prowess in a keenly contested competition.
Flying Officer Saranga Krishantha of the SLAF Base Katunayake put up a splendid performance in an attempt to uphold the prestige of the SLAF. Having immersed himself during the past few months in the oriental ‘Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa’ with untiring dedication and determination, he made it to the list of the final seven competitors, with the intention of bringing glory and pride to the SLAF. But as all the other competitors were of exceptional talent as well, he was adjudged as the seventh in this elite group.
He was awarded Rs. 250,000/=, a 32” LCD Television with free Dialog TV connection, a certificate and most importantly the opportunity to make a memorable and everlasting impression on his life. The exposure and discovery of his own talents has given him the courage and determination to compile his own collection of songs on CD, for which he is anticipating sponsorship.
The extravagant event was keenly witnessed by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady, Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Speaker Mr Chamal Rajapaksa, Secretary to President Mr Lalith Weerathunga and Mrs Weerathunga, , Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, Army, Navy and Air Force Commanders and their spouses, Director General Media Centre for National Security Mr Lakshman Hulugalle, Parliamentarians, and numerous celebrities.
