11:30pm on Monday 6th January 2025
The No 10 Fighter Squadron, known as the “Lion Cubs”, celebrated its 29 anniversary today (06 January 2025). The day began with the working parade at the Squadron which was inspected by the Commanding Officer Group Captain Prabath Wijekoon.
The Commanding Officer reflected on the illustrious history of the Squadron and acknowledged the significant contributions of past and present members over the 29 years of journey. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards across all aspects of the Squadron’s operations as one of the most decorated Squadrons in SLAF.
The No 10 Fighter Squadron was initially established with four pilots, four engineering officers and seventy technicians, all rigorously trained by IAI technical experts and instructor pilots from Israel. Over the years, the Squadron has distinguished itself as a pivotal force within the Air Force, playing a critical role in the island’s liberation from terrorism. The unwavering dedication of the Squadron personnel continues to uphold the squadron’s reputation for excellence, ensuring the Air Force ensign flies high as a symbol of national pride and security.
Marking this remarkable occasion, a fatigue programme and a Bodhipooja was organized at Bodhi Rathanaramaya temple Katunayake. There was a special remembrance of the air warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s freedom.
As the Squadron embarks on its 29th year, it is assured to usher in a new chapter with the upgradation of the technologically advanced Kfir C12 version. This transition from the C2 and C7 variants signifies the Squadron’s steadfast commitment to advancing aviation technology and operational readiness. The arrival of these cutting-edge aircraft will further enhance the Squadron’s capabilities, ensuring its continued role as a key defender of the skies, land and sea of Sri Lanka.
