No. 3 Maritime Squadron, based at SLAF Academy China Bay, proudly celebrated its 6th anniversary yesterday (11 January 2025) since reinstatement, marking 28 years of dedicated operational service to the nation.

The Squadron plays a vital role in safeguarding the sovereignty of Sri Lanka through its diverse range of missions, including Maritime and Land Air Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Search and Rescue (SAR), Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), and Maritime Pollution Monitoring and Control Operations. These missions align with the SLAF’s contribution towards safeguarding national security and assisting for sustainable development.

Significantly, the squadron recently received two state-of-the-art aircraft, the King Air 350 from Australian government and King Air 360ER from USA, to its fleet. These acquisitions enhance the Squadron’s operational capabilities and expand its surveillance range, ensuring strengthened maritime security, protection of sovereignty and providing support for Sri Lanka’s blue economy initiatives.

The 6th anniversary celebrations included a ceremonial morning parade, during which the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Nishantha Senavirathne, addressed the Squadron personnel. In his speech, he emphasized the Squadron’s critical role in national defence and outlined future expectations to further its mission.

To commemorate the occasion, the squadron also organised a tree-planting programme as a symbolic gesture of its commitment to social responsibility and environmental restoration.

As No. 3 Maritime Squadron looks to the future, it continues to embody professionalism and excellence, contributing to the nation’s maritime security and sustainable development goals.
