7:30pm on Monday 24th February 2025
The SLAF is set to commence the construction of the second phase of a five-story pediatric ward at Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama. This significant development will enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized care for children battling cancer. The project is made possible through the financial contribution of Basnayake Nilame of Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya, Mr. Dishan Gunasekara and the invaluable labor assistance from the SLAF.

The second phase of the pediatric ward will cover a total floor area of approximately 60,000 square feet, with construction expected to commence shortly and be completed within 12 months. Once finished, the ward will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities designed to meet the specific needs of inmates, providing a compassionate and efficient environment for both treatment and recovery.

The ground floor of the ward will feature an entrance lobby and an outpatient department (OPD) and facility area, streamlining the process for patient consultations and medical services. The first floor will focus on chemotherapy services, including an admission area, a chemotherapy mixing area and a 48-bed chemotherapy patient unit. Additionally, this floor will have a service area with a generator panel board, staff facility area and washroom facilities to support both patients and healthcare personnel.

The second and third floors will be dedicated to inmates care, with an admission area, counseling room, procedure room and a 40-bed patient ward, including two isolation rooms for specialized care. These floors will also feature a nursing station, staff rest room and ablution area to ensure comfort and well-being for both patients and healthcare providers. On the fourth floor, a surgical ICU with eight beds will be constructed, along with a pantry area, three parent rest rooms and a dedicated parent washroom block to offer essential support facilities for families of patients.

A special meeting was held today (24 February 2025) at Air Force Headquarters, where the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, met with project stakeholders to review the plans. Attendees at the discussion included the Director of Apeksha Hospital, Dr. Aruna Jayasekera, Paediatric Oncologist, Dr. Sanjeeva Gunasekera, Basnayake Nilame Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya, Mr. Dishan Gunasekera and other officials, alongside the Director General of Construction Engineering, Air Vice Marshal Chandana Geethapriya and senior officers from the Directorate of Construction Engineering.
