SLAF CONTRIBUTES TO INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY & NATIONAL MARINE RESOURCE CONSERVATION WEEK 2025
The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), in collaboration with the ‘Clean Sri Lanka Programme', launched the National Program to mark ‘International Coastal Cleanup Day and National Marine Resource Conservation Week 2025’ today (20 September 2025) at Panadura Beach, under the patronage of the Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
This national initiative aims to emphasize the importance of safeguarding Sri Lanka’s marine environment while mobilizing communities across the island towards conservation efforts. Thousands of volunteers representing universities, schools, government institutions, private organizations and the general public actively joined the programme.
The Ministry of Defence extended its support by deploying personnel from the Tri-Forces, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the Civil Security Department for the cleanup drive. The Sri Lanka Air Force, represented by personnel from SLAF Base Ratmalana, actively took part in the initiative, joining other services and volunteers in the coastal conservation effort. Simultaneous cleanup activities are also being organized throughout 14 coastal districts during the week from 20 to 26 September 2025.
