SLAF PLACES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE ‘CLEAN TODAY, GREEN TOMORROW’ FINALE
The SLAF successfully concluded the Final Awarding Ceremony today (26 January 2026) of the ‘Clean Today, Green Tomorrow' environmental initiative, with the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. The programme was conducted under the guidance of the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe in collaboration with Aitken Spence PLC, in line with the 75th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The initiative was designed to move beyond short-term environmental campaigns and instead embed practical, measurable and sustainable environmental practices into daily service life across SLAF establishments island wide. Projects were implemented and evaluated using observation-based and record-based criteria, focusing on long-term impact, innovation, discipline and participation of all ranks.
The ceremony was attended by Director of Aitken Spence PLC, Dr. Rohan Fernando and representatives of Aitken Spence PLC, Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera, members of the Air Force Board of Management, senior members of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Base Commanders, Commanding Officers, representatives of all establishments, senior officers, members of the evaluation Committee and invited guests.

Runners-Up: SLAF Station Sigiriya
This category recognized structured waste segregation, composting, recycling, elimination of single-use plastics and the transformation of waste into useful resources through disciplined daily practices.
Tree Plantation & Reforestation
Champion : SLAF Station Sigiriya
Runners-Up : SLAF Base Katunayake
Projects under this category focused on large-scale reforestation, biodiversity enhancement, soil and water conservation and the establishment of sustainable green belts and mini forests.
Eco-Gardening & Sustainable Cultivation
Champion : SLAF Base Katunayake
Runners-Up : SLAF Trade Training School Ekala
This category highlighted organic cultivation, food security, rehabilitation of degraded land, use of compost and rainwater irrigation and strong trainee participation.
Water & Energy Conservation
Champion : SLAF Station Sri Jayewardenepura
Runners-Up : SLAF Trade Training School Ekala
Awards were presented for measurable reductions in water and electricity consumption achieved through demand management, optimization of existing systems, rainwater reuse, LED conversion, solar solutions and behavioral change.
Spence Impact Award
Winner : SLAF Station Iranamadu
A special highlight of the ceremony was the Spence Impact Award, presented directly by Aitken Spence PLC, recognizing an SLAF establishment that demonstrated responsible operations within a sensitive forest ecosystem while ensuring effective environmental impact control.
Best All-Round Performance Establishment
In recognition of consistent excellence across multiple categories,
the Best All-Round Performance Establishment Award was presented to: SLAF Trade Training School, Ekala
The establishment achieved Champion status in Waste Management & Camp Cleaning, while securing Runners-Up positions in Water & Energy Conservation and Eco-Gardening & Sustainable Cultivation, reflecting a holistic and integrated approach to sustainability.
The event highlighted that Clean Today, Green Tomorrow is not merely an environmental programme, but a reflection of the Air Force’s responsibility to protect land, water, forests and future generations, alongside its core defence role. The partnership with Aitken Spence PLC was also acknowledged as a strong example of public–private collaboration for national sustainability.
